A native rush that provides good nesting cover for waterfowl. The shoots are eaten by geese while the seeds are eaten by ducks. It grows well in both flooded and saturated areas. A mainstay of the western marsh; it readily spreads. It holds onto to its seed for a long period of time.  Best planted in fall.
